The Big Question: What Happens When Botox Wears Off? Will I Look Older? No, Quite the Opposite!

Hello fellow beauty lovers! It’s officially April and you know what that means. Time for a new blog post! This month, we want to answer a burning question that we get all of the time at our South Carolina med spa, Back to 30.

“What happens when Botox wears off?”

This is a great question, and we’re going to give you some great information in this post! If you’ve been holding off on Botox because you are fearful of what might happen when it wears off, you’re going to love this post.

We love talking about Botox! As you may already know, Botox is an extremely popular cosmetic procedure. For those wanting to smooth out wrinkles and skip the plastic surgery, Botox is a great option. Botox is commonly used for crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead creases, lines around the chin, lines around the mouth, and sagging or drooping eyebrows. Botox is a fast, convenient and non-invasive procedure providing nearly immediate results. However, Botox is not a permanent treatment and does not yield permanent results.

So, the big question remains, “what happens when it wears off?” Many clients fear they will look older after Botox wears off. However, the opposite is actually true. You will actually look younger (we’ll explain soon) than if you didn’t have the Botox injections.

Anyway, we’ll get to the point! There is one effect that comes with Botox wearing off and it’s simple. The wrinkles will return. However, not like you think! The wrinkles will return a little bit slower than if you had not been getting Botox injections. Plus, there are so many benefits to having Botox, even after you stop. We’ll go over them in this post, so keep reading!

Even though Botox doesn’t offer permanent results, it doesn’t mean the results don’t last for a good amount of time. In fact, Botox typically lasts around 3 to 4 months. When you come in for your consultation, we will answer all of your questions about Botox and how long you can expect your results to last. It can vary from person to person depending on your lifestyle, stress, hormones, and routines.

A fun fact.. Botox’s 20th anniversary is 4/15/2022! Make sure you check Alle for any upcoming specials!

Let’s refresh, how does Botox work?

We did a blog post in January explaining how Botox works, but let’s give a little refresher. Botox contains botulinum toxin. Does anyone remember what this protein does? Show of hands! It temporarily immobilizes the facial muscles it is injected to. So, when Botox is injected it will “freeze” those facial muscles so they can’t contract. Think about when you contract your face, like raising your eyebrows. When you do that, wrinkles and lines form.

Now, back to the process of the Botox wearing off. If you’re wondering how this happens, it’s actually quite simple. Our bodies are always in a constant state of rejuvenation. In other words, our bodies are always healing and rejuvenating, which means the effects of cosmetic treatments like Botox will eventually wear off.

Botox can’t affect your facial muscles permanently. Your natural regenerative properties will take over and those lines and wrinkles will start to appear again over time. Don’t worry, there are things you can do that will help your results stay longer even after you’ve stopped getting Botox injections.

Why Does It Wear Off?

Botox blocks signals to facial muscle nerves by blocking the release of certain neurotransmitters. When those neurotransmitters are blocked from releasing, the muscles can’t move or contract. However, they can’t stay blocked forever. Typically, after 3 to 6 months, your muscles will be allowed to contract and start moving again because your body will start producing new neurotransmitters. Those new neurotransmitters actually override the botulinum toxin. This is around the time patients will come in for another Botox injection.

As discussed in past posts, Botox does require multiple treatments for clients to get the full benefit. It’s not something you can do once and never again if you want to continue seeing the gorgeous results! The good news is that when Botox wears off, you don’t have to worry about immediate wrinkles showing up! After Botox wears off, you have some time before wrinkles reappear, and longer if you’ve kept up a Botox routine. Either way, you will have time to plan for your next appointment. Back to 30 always recommends booking your next visit 90 days out.

What’s really exciting is that the more you use Botox, the more it can actually help to train your muscles so that you’ll need less of it in the future. When you have a long-term plan or routine for Botox, there are several long-term benefits! One of those long-term benefits is that it will delay the appearance of aging. Think about it, when you have Botox, those muscles that are normally moving and contracting all the time have been frozen and immobile. They haven’t been working out, causing wrinkles and lines to form! Your muscles won’t have worked as hard as someone who hasn’t had Botox, so you’re delaying the appearance of wrinkles and aging! Make sense? This is why even after you stop Botox you won’t look older, you will look younger because Botox has preventive effects.

What Else Makes Botox Wear Off?

While you can’t prevent your body’s natural processes from happening, there are other outside factors you can take a look at to make sure you’re getting the most out of your Botox. Here are some things to consider when you get Botox.

Take Care of Your Skin: This is a big one, obviously! You will want to moisturize your skin daily. Moisturizing your skin can help keep it plump and firm until your next session. Invest in a great moisturizer. We can help you decide on a great product when you come in!

Eat Right and Drink Water: What you put into your body does matter. It’s important to eat right. Another big one is to make sure you’re drinking enough water. Drinking water is good for the skin! You will want to avoid processed and packaged foods, and eat food that support the health of your skin.

Minimize Stress: Okay, we know this one can be difficult in today’s fast paced world. It’s life, and things are bound to happen! However, high stress levels can enhance common signs of aging. There are so many great ways to decrease the stress in your life that not only could improve the life of your Botox results, but also improve your life overall!
