Let’s Talk Skin Rejuvenation! RF Microneedling Versus IPL Rejuvenation

Home / Blog / Let’s Talk Skin Rejuvenation! RF Microneedling Versus IPL Rejuvenation
by backto30

we want to talk about RF Microneedling versus IPL. We offer both incredible treatments at Back to 30. We get a lot of questions regarding these treatments and many people wonder what the differences are between the two. We think this blog post will answer many questions and help you decide which one might be right for you!

To give you a brief overview, RF (stands for radiofrequency) Microneedling is used to rejuvenate the skin. This procedure uses tiny needles to cause slight injury to the skin, and the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. Now, regular Microneedling just uses the tiny needles… RF Microneedling enhances the results even more because it adds radiofrequency to the treatment!

Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. The new skin tissue that forms is more even in tone as well as texture. Now, add the RF to it and the process is enhanced. The heat created by the added RF energy compresses underlying skin layers, helping further smooth out more severe lines and wrinkles. You’re basically combining two great technologies to create one outstanding treatment!

RF Microneedling can be used to tackle early signs of aging, acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, poor skin texture and more.

Now, let’s briefly discuss IPL. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. So, this treatment uses light energy instead of tiny needles. This light energy is computer-controlled and used to target melanin, while treating the underlying skin layers. This treatment also stimulates collagen production. Since IPL light waves can penetrate melanin, it is able to break up discoloration deep within the skin’s surface, without damaging the outer layer. This treatment can also be used to reduce the appearance of scars, lighten darker patches of skin and improve the appearance of spider veins.

Now that you have a basic understanding of both treatments, let’s dive into more detail and discuss how they work, the benefits and what to expect with each one.

Which Treatment is Invasive?

Good news! Both IPL and RF Microneedling are effective non-invasive treatments for rejuvenating the skin. While there may be some very minor discomfort during each treatment, there is no downtime after the procedures. You can achieve great results and skip the plastic surgery!

What are the Benefits of Each?

In order to decide if IPL or RF Microneedling is right for you, you will want to know the benefits of each treatment. First, let’s discuss the benefits of RF Microneedling.

RF Microneedling offers many advantages over other forms of non-invasive skin rejuvenation. This treatment can be suitable for more clients than other treatments because it is appropriate for most skin types. Benefits of RF Microneedling can include:

  • Smoother Skin
  • Decreased Hyperpigmentation
  • More Even Skin Tone & Texture
  • More Youthful-Looking Skin
  • Smaller, Tighter Pores
  • Reduced Visibility of Acne Scars

Now, for the benefits of IPL. IPL is designed to activate the skin’s natural healing processes without harming delicate dermal tissue. As the skin repairs itself, it will shed its dull, damaged outer layer and form vibrant new skin. The light emitted during treatment also breaks down the dark pigment inside age spots, discoloration, and sun damaged skin. Benefits of IPL Rejuvenation can include:

  • Improved Appearance of Scars
  • Firmer, Tighter, Smoother Skin
  • Reduced Skin Discolorations (such as birthmarks, age spots, sunspots, and freckles)
  • Reduced Appearance of Spider Veins
  • Reduced Wrinkles
  • Decreased Pore Size
  • Decreased Redness from Rosacea

What Can You Expect with Each Treatment?

When it comes to RF Microneedling, before treatment begins, a member of our team will apply a topical numbing cream. Once it sets in and you feel comfortable, we will apply the RF Microneedling to the treatment area. This will create thousands of microscopic pinpricks at varying depths. You may feel a warming sensation from the radiofrequency, and a pricking feeling from the Microneedling.

The entire treatment time usually takes about 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area you are getting treated. Many clients require multiple treatments to achieve optimum results. Keep in mind that you may notice effects immediately after treatment, but your skin will continue to heal itself over the next several weeks.

Now, let’s talk about what you can expect with the IPL. During IPL treatment, one of our team members will cleanse and prepare your face for optimal comfort and results. Once the skin is prepared, we will give you protective eyewear and the IPL device will be placed over the area being treated. IPL computer-controlled technology allows us to adjust the level of light waves administered to benefit your skin’s texture and tone, so the imperfections are successfully treated.

It will depend on the size and number of areas that we are treating, but treatment can usually be completed in about 30 minutes. We like to say that the sensation may feel somewhat like a rubber band being snapped against the skin but is not generally described as painful.

How Soon Can I See Results?

You’re probably wondering how soon you will see results with both treatments. When it comes to RF Microneedling, you can start seeing results in as little as a few days. However, further results start to develop as your body starts to produce more collagen. The tightening effect and results are going to appear as time goes on, over six months – which is the time taken by the skin to fully rebuild itself.

As for IPL, it starts working pretty much immediately, so you will notice results the same day as you get your treatment. This is because when the treatment takes place, the energy stimulates your body’s natural regenerative properties.

However, like Microneedling, your results will be visible after four to six weeks. When it comes to the number of treatments required, it will vary from client to client. When you come in for a complimentary consultation, we will review the details with you and go over all your questions regarding treatment areas, before and after treatment, what to expect and more.

We think it is important to note that immediately after treatment, you can return to normal activity, but you should wear a good sunscreen with high SPF to protect your skin. You want to prevent any further damage!
